Joe Salmons will reintroduce a constitutional amendment to the Student Senate Wednesday calling for minority repre sentation in that body. The meeting will be the last for Bega la, Vice President Jon McNeil and the lame-duck senators, as the new Stu dent Senate will be sworn in Monday. The Minority Representation Act failed by two votes March 9. A two-thirds vote of the senate is required before an amendment is presented to the student body as a referendum. The senate also will consider a new election code proposed by the Judicial Commission, allowing voting privi leges for students in an intensive Eng lish program sponsored by the Univer sity, and an amendment to the senate’s bylaws that would reorganize the sen ate’s committee structure. Gilbert Amine, a consultant to Bega la, said Friday the Minority Represen tation Act has a “good chance” of pass ing Amine said the return of members absent from the March 9 meeting will improve the amendment’s chances of passing at this meeting. The amendment creates special at large seats in the Student Senate for black, Hispanic and foreign students at a ratio of one seat for every 2,000 stu dents. Any student would be allowed to run for the special seats. Proponents of the measure point to the results of the March 2 election, in which no blacks, Hispanics or foreign students gained a seat. They charge that the dilution of their voting strength denies the representation of more than 8,000 students. “We are not trying to take anything away from anybody,” Amine said
