Every nieht is celebrity night for white and black alike..Last Friday we saw Jules Bledsoe, who rose to fame with “Show Boat” Juanita Hall, director of the musical group bearing her name; Bill Chase of the Amsterdam News and too many others.Garland Wilson does some inspired piano playing and Jimmie Daniels has a way of rendering songs that is all his own. He possesses, beside a nice looking face, just the right amount of friendliness to make his guests feel at home—but not too mucn at home ..This capturing of the public fancy entails a lot of work..Witness Richard Huey’s daily rehearsals for his radio program. ‘•The Sheep Oats Club”—Originally called the Aunt Dinah ? Kitchen Club, this name had to be dropped because it happens to be the same as Mr. Huey’s place of business, would constitute advertising. and other firms advertising over WOR might feel that they tori should have a radio progrart free of charge.The entire idea grew out of a desire to let. the public .share inthe fun and good fellowship which visitors to the Kitchen enjoy, and the scripts, written by Geraldine Garrett, Ann Honeycut and Mr Huey, are based almost entirely cn the things they do to have fun.... The sheep represent the good Christian people and the goats irr those of us who are not quire sc good..not bad, but who strike ; happy unhappy medium..Richard Wright's “Native Son remains on most of the best sell er lists..As Lil Abner Yokuzn would say—“Oh, happy day.'Strange the furore a few determined souls, with nothing else to do, can stir up..for example, the hue and cry raised over the appointment of Bertrand Russell as philosophy professor at the College of the City of New' York, located a stone’s throw from Seventh avenue at 138th street. It would seem that the eminent Dr. Russell is an advocate of “free love ’* whatever that means to the churchmen. .We have our own ideas anent that but they have no place here Anyway, they disregard the 30 or more books written by Dr. Russell on philosophy and mathematics and fasten tenaciously on his three or four popular treatments of current problem.The Harlem Branch YMCA observed Holy week with afternoon vesper services led by some of Harlem’s outstanding ministers.-Rev. William Lloyd Imes, pastor of St. James Presbyterian church, opened the series. .The Rose McClendon players are to present what the press agent calls a colored 'Abe ' Lincoln in Illinois.’’ to wit: “Book-er T. Washington.” an original drama on the life of the ereat American Negro written bv William for Ashby. The play is to run for three weeks, bes;nning March at the Rose McClendon workshop.
