KANTISHNA OLD TIMER ENDSLIFE TO ESCAPE FREEZINGAlbert Maurice, a pioneer resident of Alaska and an old-timer of the Kantishna district, took his life recently in that district to escape death by freezing. 11 is body was found later by a chance visitor and. after investigation by Commissioner Ed Brooker, was sent to Nenana for burial, with a request that the Pioneers officiate at the funeral service. In accordance with this request the funeral was held under the auspices of the Nenana Igloo of Pioneers. The deceased was a charter member of the Fairbanks Igloo but was many years in arrears in his dues at the time of his death.According to the information received by President R. 0. Morriss. of Nenana Igloo, the old-timer had a severe attack of rheumatism and finally became bed-ridden. Realizing that he would freeze to death in his lonely cabin unless help arrived he wrote a note explaining his condition and plans and then tied a string to The trigger of his gun and shot himself through the heart. When the body was found there was a plentiful supply of wood close to the door of the cabin, indicating that Maurice was too badly crippled to get to it to keep his fire going.
