Johnstone, Calgary. TOWN COUNCIL. Tuesday, March 24. Communications were read from W. J. Richardson, W. J. Stiff, 8. C. Wilson and H. F. Greenwood applying for position of auditor ; A. A. Andrews, re chemical engine; R. H. Haywood, re fire insurance rates ; ¥. M. Mahon, chemical engine; citizens, local improvement petition; R. Hockley, regarding occupation of hall by fire brigade; T. W. Chalmers, arrears of taxes; Hockley, use of hall by hand; J. Kelly, McLeod estate taxes; Dr. H. C. Wilson, delegation. The request of the fire brigade for the privilege of establishing a ‘batch” in the fire hall was granted subject to the making of satisfactory arrangements. A double assessment of taxes against T. W. Chalmers was refunded. The request of J. E. Kelly reversing taxes on the D. McLeod estate was referre to the finance committee. A communication from A. G. Randall re garding the sinking fund was filed. The fire brigade band was allowed the use of the hall on Monday and Thursday of each week. W. Stiff was appointed auditor at $5.00 per month. The communication from R. H. Hay wood, regarding insurance, was acknowl edged and it was decided to take up the question of a fire alarm system for the town. It was decided to ask the commissioner of of the H. B. Co. for a free right of way for the proposed railway across the H. B. property and for a land grant as well and to forward him a copy of the plan. The finance committee reported that the discrepancies in the collectors rell which had been pointed out by the auditors had been satisfactorily accounted for by the collector. The finance committee recommended pay ment of the following accounts : H. Goodridge, Fire Brigade, J. T. Blowey, Roas Brou., Kelly Lubbock, Pay sheet, dos, Kelly, A. McCauley, Herald, N. D. Beck, ee Cowie—Bellamy moved that the board of works be requested to report on the ex pediency of granting the request of the petitioners for the sidewalk on Numayo avenue. Lost. Sutter—Edmiston moved that the board of works be instructed to call for tenders for the construction of the sidewalk, Car ried. Estimated cost $1,000. St. Geo Jellett was re-appointed collect or for 1896. Licenses were granted to J. Walter for the upper ferry and to W. H. Durdle and W. Humberstone for the two lower ferries. The St. Andrews society was granted the use of the council chamber for a meeting on April 3rd. Letters from Mayor Wilson, addressed to acting Mayor McCauley regarding the pro gress of the Edmonton district railway charter, were read. The bill is now before senate. It has been amended to give power to amalgamate with the Edmonton street railway company, whose charter had a prior claim.
