GURNEE Eugene Dady, of Chicago, is at home for a few days vacation. — Frank Lumber expects to go to Salt Lake City in the near future. W. K. Richie is visiting his old home at Three Rivers Mid.; this week. Miss Emma Thomas, ‘ Lake Forest’ teacher, visited the, “see McClure Sunday, VA. Rossbach visited his father in-law, Geo. 8. Smith, at South Evans ton Sunday. House moving and building are being delayed considerable by the cold weather. Miss Freda Losaman is again in our midst after a short visit with parents at Warrenton. Mrs. Geo. Doyle went to Milwaukee Monday where she will work at the dressmaking trade. George Sherman who has been visit ing his grandparents returned to his home in Chicago Monday. _L. M. Brown, W. K. Richie, J. R. Brachet and Andrew Strang” were in Chicago Monday on business. Ope Hivsion or genial music teacher left Sunday evening for a two weeks’ visit with his parents in Nebraska. The meat wagon of Gray McClure is seen on the road nearly every day distributing meat to their many customers. The unemployed of our village will not join Coxey’s army but may make a local demonstration in the near future. There was no preaching service at the church Sunday evening the pastor being compelled to return to Chicago in the afternoon. Pedestrians can now go from the east to the west side on dry walks during bad weather. The sidewalks are a decided improvement to the village. On account of the absence of Prof. Hosic the singing class will not meet this week, but will meet next week as usual. The time of meeting has been changed to 7:45. Physians say that the diphtheria is frequently caused by eating apples that have been stored in a cellar a long time: they should be washed or peeled before eating. Andrew Strang is kept busy at the warehouse. We have reason to be proud of a man with the energy and ability of Mr. 8 conduct. this Se It is reported that a summer normal for teachers and advanced students will be conducted here about six weeks in June and July. We trust the rumor is well founded. Why not have it here? Gurnee is booming. While about town in search for news last week our “reporter” thought he would drop in at the High school. It being Friday he learned that the G.P. 8. L. 8. would give us bi weekly entertainment hence he con cluded to remain and ‘‘write ’em up. At the Y. P. 8 S. C. E. meeting last Thursday evening the fol lowing officers were elected for the coming six months: J. B. Clark, Pres. Chas. Chase, Vice Pres; May Mce Cullough, Recording Secy; Alice Ide, ‘Treas. They will be installed next Sunday evening. The winter term of school closes Friday and will be followed by a week’s vacation. The spring term will open Monday, April 9th. An entertainment and conundrum supper will be given by the societies at public school building Friday evening admis sion 25 cents for benefit of school library. Teachers and pupils are working hard for the library; help the good work alone. We can justly be proud of our schools. The program was of good length. The numbers were well rendered and showed careful preparation. It im pressed your scribe as being among the most important work of the school and was certainly conducted in a most thorough and business like manner. The question, ‘‘Resolved that Hawaii should not be annexed to the U. S.” was debated; affirmative, Jay Farrell and Ralph Cady; negative Arthur Gullage and Wm. Campbell. The president appointed Miss Strang and Messrs. Wooley and Smith as judges. The debating was close and spirited, but resulted in the negative gaining the victory by a few points. A very good paper reviewing the current school news of the week was read by Lin Wooley. It added much to the variety of the program. SCRIPSI, GRAYS LAKE. food has returned from the A. Moral: Never note on two big a jag. The entertainment by the Avon Center school last Friday evening was quite a success and reflected credit upon the pupils and teacher Miss Nettie Drew. About eight dollars which was taken in was considerable as the admission fee was only ten cents. Every private citizen should have his name and address printed on the paper and envelopes which he uses, as it saves many mistakes; and if he gets a reasonable number printed, he can get paper, printing and all at the Lake County INDEPENDENT office, Libertyville, as cheap as he can buy the blank paper. ‘Tuesday evening while at the barber shop Judge Phelps mistaking the source of an abuse received then and there began to mete out supposed jus tice on the barber who, being innocent and not understanding the cause of the assault retaliiated at once by ejecting his assailant who by the way went through a glass panel door.The only damage or loss being two tempers and one glass panel all of which were soon restored, the parties shook hands, became fast friends and resolved to follow the old moral. “Look before you leap.” SUSSCRIPTION TERMS: One year, cash in advance.... 2X months, cash in advance.. . Hughs has been serious ly ill, but is reported to be on the gain. Quite a number of our young people attended the dance at McHenry, Mon day night. The band boys are jubilant Fred Wynkoop has so far recovered as to be out among them once more. Stone “has been very ill at her residence just out of town, but is quite comfortable at this writing. Ed. Hamm and wife nee Grace Davis are entertaining Mr. Hamm's father, mother and sister, of Narmony, Sr. Alvert Mullen, one of Wauconda enterprising young men, is now pro prietor of the Leader. We wish him success in his new venture. It will soon be town election, next in order will be village election and school director. The ladies will help in the latter as they did last year. Lora Harrison, who has been at tending school at Evanston has finish ed her schooling and come home to stay. She purposes to teach music. Mrs. H. B. Burritt Who took a fall at her home a couple weeks ago was not so badly injured as was feared. She is able to be around again. Erskin Osas rented the Swen son Hotel and is fitting it up ‘in first class style for a boarding louse. This large hotel was erected three years ago and has never been occupied before. N.B. Duers was called to Ring Wood last week by the serious illness of his sister Mrs. Lee Andrus. She is very lone with small hopes of her iibe 4 Semp lage tioe tech ASP it H. Maiman, wife and two children took their departure last Friday for Ceder Rapids, In. where they will spend a couple weeks with Herman Maiman and Mrs. M’s parents Mr. and Mrs. W. Geesler. The remains of Mrs. E. Grace were brought here last Wednesday for in terment. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church where a large concourse of relatives and friends gathered to pay tribute to the memory of the deceased. Mrs. Grace was formerly a Miss Kate Murray and used to reside here. She died very suddenly of heart disease at her residence The Hotel Grace in Chicago.
