Associated Press ST. LOUIS — For the second time in three years, the United States Basketball Writers As sociation has named Lou Carnesecca college basketball’s coach of the year. Carnesecca is in his 17th sea son at St. John’s University. The Redmen (31-3) have qualified for the NCAA semifinals this week end in Lexington, Ky. It is the New York school’s first Final Four appearance since 1952 and the first ever for Carnesecca. The St. Louis-based associa tion announced the award Tues day. Carnesecca also won the honor in 1983. Suns’ Davis out PHOENIX — Phoenix Suns’ guard Walter Davis was placed on the injury list Wednesday and will miss the remainder of the season. Davis had been hobbled since he sprained his right ankle in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks on March 16. An examina tion of the ankle revealed symp tomatic bone spurs, but Davis had hoped to postpone surgery until after the season ended. Davis missed the first 47 games of the season because of torn ligaments in his left knee, suffered during an exhibition notes game against the Los Angeles Lakers at The Forum on Oct. 9. After returning to action Jan. 31, Davis appeared in 20 games and averaged 15 points. “There's little doubt in my mind Walter Davis suffered ir reparable damage to his knee and career when he sustained a knee injury during the exhibition season at the Los Angeles Fo rum,”’ Phoenix general manager Jerry Colangelo said Wednes day. Horford wavering HOUSTON — Houston schoolboy Tito Horford, one of the most intensely recruited players in the nation until he signed a letter of intent with the Houston Cougars last Novem ber, now says he’s having sec ond thoughts about playing in Houston. “Everybody was after me,” Horford to The Houston Post. ‘“‘The congressman, Mickey Leland, even called me asking to sign with Houston. My mother does not want me to go to Hous ton, and I try to do what my family wants me to do.
