From Prof. Riste. The following letter from Prof. Riste to Supt. Thomas in answer to an inquiry is self-explanatory. Prof. Riste is weli known in this county as one of the ablest educators In the state.Cot.by, Kans., Mar. 20, 1001. Supt. John Thomas,Phlliipsbiirg, Kans.Dear Si* :—In reply to yours of yesterday I will say that 1 consider the county high school to be a decided success. We are now giving three years of business course, three years of Normal course and four years of college preparatory work at a less expense per individual tax payer than we previously gave one year of high school work for the city school alone.Another element of success lies in the fact that the county is furnishing these advantages to over 100 young people per year, while formerly, less than 40 persons from the county were benefittcd by the high school work.Again, the country schools are being relieved from that class of scholars who demand the iuo6t of the teachers’ time and energy. In this way the important work of character building is much better done in the country school, and the rural tax payer gams a decided advantage in the class of work duue there. The teachers of the county are gaining advantages at home at a amaU outlay, and are largely taking advantage of the high school work. Thus more capable teachers are doing the work iu the country, and the condition of the country school is again benefitted by the high school work. One can hardly comprehend how much is gained by the association of the stalwart element from the country with the refinement and culture from the city. The outgrow th of this one feature of the school will produce an enterprise and culture in a commuity that will repay the one or even two mill expenditure. And then again, tlje pupils of the community are receiving instruction from three or four professional teachers, who are each a specialist in some line of training, instead of the overcrowded work of the struggling city high school. In our own high school, more than two-thirds of the persons who take advantage of the high school work are from the country, and it is generally recognized that this element, when educa ted, makes our stalwart American citizenship.Does the county high school pay? Yes. Tell my friends and your friends, that without regard to the location, it is the best paying investment, morally, socially and financially that can be made.Trusting that your people will see fit to establish a sehtKfi, and that the young people of your county may have rbefcadvantage they so much need. 1 am, Yours truly,Yt. G. Riste,
