^ A Ul tUV * I »*v ^ --A Colored Artist.Something has been said, within a few months, relative to Mr: Danewon, an artist, of CmcinnalL The newspapers seem to have taken some p^ins to emphasize th* fact that he is a colored man, which, I suppose, means that he has African blood in his veins. No prejudice, on this account, has been excited ; but the statement has rather been made inhis praise.I spent an hour with Mr. Duncanson, a year ago, in his studio ; but never suspected, from his cora-p'exion, conversation or any other circumstance, tha the was a colored man. Being, myself, a painter, and accustomed to scrutinize tints very close }y, IJara surprised that I could have overlooked the fact mentioned. I enjoyed the hour very ricly, in many ways, and especially in looking at.and talking about, his celebrated picture, the Garden of Eden, which then reclined upon his easel, in a state of progress. Mr. Son tag, the landscape painter, was also present most of the time, but did not seem to beoffeoded with the color of Mr. Duncansoms akin. This worthy artist and gentleman can, at least, have so little of the despised color and blood, as to have nothing to fear from this cause. His talents and merit as an artist, elevate him far above suchcontingencies. The friends of humanity have reason to rejoice, that a few who are denominated colored men, have from time to time arisen to the highest positions inutefatuxcandthc Alts. And may 'Wfi'nMmiiwuthat the whole race, of which they are members.may be proportionately elevated. J. F. H.
