Luis VigilLuis Vigil, 92, of Amarillo died Friday, March 22, 2013.Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m.Sunday, March 24. 2013, in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday,March 25, 2013, in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Rev. N.M Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.Luis was born March 29, 1920, in Sena, N.M., to Aurelio and Predicanda Vigil He grew up on a ranch near Gonzales, N.M. He married Tillie Chacon on April 13, 1947, in St Ann's Church in Tucumcari, N.M. He worked for Southern Railroad for approximately 12 years. For the remainder of his career, he was in the plumbing trade.He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. (CCC) from April 1937 to March 1939, where he learned to work with explosives. He was a veteran of World War II. He joined the New Mexico Army Reserves in July 1940 and was converted to the Army in September 1940. He received three specialties while in the Army: engineer basic, cooking and jack-hammer operator. He was also trained in general carpentry and participated in hand to hand combat. He received the American Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was involved in the following campaigns: EAME Theater Ribbon, Battle Star Sicilian Campaign, Battle Star Napels-Foggia Campaign, Battle Star Rome-Arno Campaign. Battle Star Southern France Campaign, Battle Star Rhineland Campaign, Battle Star Central Europe Campaign and Bronze Sen/ice Arrowhead. His company, Company C 120th Engineer Combat Battalion, had a big part in burying the victims of the Jewish Holocaust. As a memorial, his company built a wooden Star of David on the hill above the mass graves to honor those buried there.He was preceded in death by his wife, Tillie Vigil, and ason, Ruben Vigil.Survivors include five sons, Louis Vigil, Jr. and wife Luisa, Bobby Vigil and wife Rebecca and Steve Vigil, all of Amarillo, Jerry Vigil and wife Darice of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jim Vigil and wife Lori of Agoura Hills, Calif.; vo daughters, Gloria Jean Lynch and husband Mike of Plymouth, Minn., and Cynthia Spring Villegas of Amarillo; three brothers Richard, Albert and Leo; four sisters, Nea, Rose.
