Camp Tanglewood building in Walton Preserve razedBy Eileen HansenTrees and plants will eventually grow on the site of Camp Tanglewood, a clubhouse built in the early 1970’s by the Camp Tanglewood Association, organized to foster Girl Scout activities.Located in the Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve, the building had fallen into disrepair and had been deteriorating for some time, said Robert Ahlf, president of the Preserve.Several attempts were made to find an organization to assume repair and maintenance of the building, but the organization’s board of directors decided the best thing to do was to demolish the building before it became a nuisance in the neighborhood, said Ahlf. The building, located west of the baseball field area and off the north end of Armitage Court, has been demolished with the help of volunteers, he said.“We plan to restore the area as a natural thick native wood for good wild life habitat and scenic enhancement,” said Ahlf.“I think it will be an improvement. We have no intention of putting another building there or anything which could be a detriment to the neighborhood,” he said..The clubhouse saw only limited activity before the Girl Scouts terminated their use of Camp Tanglewood in 1976.The building had been used by the Homewood-Flossmoor-Glenwood Jaycees as its headquarters for a number of years until they disbanded as an organization■ See TANGLEWOOD, Page A-4
