Bob Nuckolls, local Belk- Simpson store manager, told The Press today his firm’s plans are incomplete on the future of a 40-by-204 foot lot off the south side of the Square. That area was a projected ‘Mall’ or ‘‘arcade’’ planned by the city. However, Monday night the outgoing city council authorized Mayor John C. Sheldon to enter into a sale agreement with Berks at a total purchase price of $10,000. Nuckolls noted the formal purchase had not yet taken place. He expects it will be completed soon. He adds the store has ‘‘no formal plans at this time; we want to wait until the purchase is final — then we'll just have to take it one step-at-a-time.”’ Belks employs its own ar chitects out of the Charlotte, N.C. home office. As to whether company architects or local ones would figure in Belks’ plans, Nuckolls would not say. The Joplin architectural engineering firm of Allgeier- Martin Associates was employed by the city on the earlier mall project.
