WKnights of Pythias hall was well filed for the programm and banquet, which will take rank with the import ant events of the year in this com munity. Speakers introduced by Principal Edward Kammeyer, were: Mirl A. Geller, Defiance, alumnus of Ney High school; Dr. A. G. Caris, president of Defiance College; Ralph W. Peters, editor of the Defiance Crescent News; William L. Manahan, superintendent of the county schools; Walter Studer, faculty manager; Edgar Bergman, coach; Welton Pollock captain of the high school boys’ team, and Mildred Kimberly, captain of the county cham pionship girls’ team. Strong support was expressed for the proposed community hall in Ney, to give the team a better place to practice and play next year. With an opportunity to accommodate bigger crowds, the indoor sport can be put more nearly on a paying basis, it was believed. Visiting speakers congratulated the community and the players, players thanked the community for support, and everybody joined in celebration of the best showing ever made by a New basketball team. The girls won the county championship and the boys, victorious in both the county and sec tional tournaments, were beaten only when they reached the semi-finals in the state Class B tournament at Col umbus. “Who misses or who wins the prize, Go lose or conquer if you can. But if you full or if you rise, Be each, pray God, a gentleman.” Those lines, taught to 2» Ney high school team several years ago by William L. He emphasized the alertness and the ability of quickly sizing up all situations which ath letics teach. Teamwork, courage, honesty and persistency are other fundamental qualities in integrity and character which the right kind of sports teach, he declared. “You never know the young peo ple of a community until you asso ciate with them in play,” said Coun ty Superintendent Manahan. He made a plea for community co-opera tion, as the only way by which Ney can accomplish her objectives. Co operation, he pointed out, will pro mote efficiency, good feeling and en thusiasm. He praised the attitude of Swede Oberlander of Dartmouth in refusing to commercialize his foot ball ability, in contrast to that of Red Grange. Supt. Manahan drew applause when he reported communications from the tournament management at Bowling Green and from one of the officials, praising the New team's upholding of Defiance county's “traditional” good sportsmanship. Walter Studer, faculty manager, re lated that he had attended all the sames, and that he had never once seen any New player make an inten tional dirty or unsportsmanlike play. He suggested a community play or supper as a means of raising money to reward the players with honor sweaters.
