Joan uojgiazier, or south oaiem,spent Sunday at his (arm.After a brief illness, Joseph Spurgeon, one among the oldest and best known citizeos of Washington county, passed away at the home of his son, William, Wednesday, March 18. 1908, at 7 p. m., at the age of 86 years. The deceased was a sod of Jonah Spurgeon who came to this county from North Carolina as early as (810, and settled near Norris on what is now known as Spurgeon bill, where Joseph was born. He was married to Elmira McKinney and eight children were born unto them Bis wife and four children preceded him to the better laud. His four remaining children were with hitu in his last hours. They are Mrs. William Hancock, of Browrstown; Mrs Martha Welch of Salem, and two sons. Calvin and William. Wiley Spurgeon, a brother of Joseph, lives in Brown county and is a veteran of the Mexican war. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Winslow, of this county. Joseph was at) honest, industrious citizen. He believed that bread was not sweet unless earned by honest toil. He labored as long ashis physical strength would permit and then desired to live no longer. The funeral services were held at his son's home Friday at 10 a. ro., conducted by Rev. I. I. St. John. Many of his grand* children were present at the funeral to pay the last tribute of respect to their grandfather. Shall the memory of t^ese aged fathers pass into forgetfulness. His remains were brought to Salem for lt;n-terment arid laid to Test inOrowncemetery.
