A German author has pointed out that a large number of Phoenician inscriptions have been found in South America. However, these have not been determined genuine. One example of an inscription long considered a fake, but now believed genuine is the Kinsington stone, now on exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute. It is inscribed with Norse runes concerning an early Viking exploring expedition. %Different opinions hav^ arisen regarding the mystery writings near Los Lunas. Dr. Frank Hibben, University of New Mexico anthropology professor, first examined the writings in about 1936. He felt the inscription was most likely the work of a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons), probably at the time the Mormons first came west. The rock itself is approximately three feet by lour feet.It is reddish brown basalt. The surface of such a rockrequired a dark coating known as desert varnish* the action of which is not understood. However, when the surface is scratched, the inscription appears as though chalked.Desert varnish is said to form slowly and possibly this is one way the age of thestone could be determined. The mystery inscription has been examined by a Smithsonian archaeologist, dignitaries of the Mormon church, a Catholic priest and many Bible students. None have called the writings a fake or hoax, but their origin remains a mystery. Many of the letters on the rock near Los Lunas are similar to the Phoenician inscription on the sarcophagus of King of Sidon (date 572 B.C.)Since the professionals have not yet found the answer to the mystery writings, perhaps some ambitious amateur with an adventurous spirit will be the one to stumble on an answer.Workshops, business meetings and the election of officers will highlight the annual District I meeting of the New Mexico Extension Homemakers Council at Bernalillo High School Saturday.Discussions on such subjects as citizenship, international relations, cultured arts, safety and how to have a good family argument willtake up much of the morning session.Election of officers and business meetings are scheduled for the afternoon.Valley women listed as delegates to attend the day-long conference are Mrs. Charles Burris, Mrs. Ernest Sanchez, Mrs. H.C.
