Takes the Cake. •There is a slang phrase used to express excellence. When anything is regarded very fine,' it is common in slang parlance to say “That takes the cake.1'’ Will you please explain how the expression originated and what it means. Slt;Among the colored people at balls and breakdowns it is customary to introduce what is called a cake walk. The men choose part; ners and. the couples walk around the room infusing into their motions all the grace and elegance for which the negro race is noted. A prize of a cake is awarded to the pah* which is pronounced by the judges to have walked the floor in the most nimble and artistic fashion.
