Associate Conductor RobertShaw will lead The ClevelandOrchestra In the final Twilight Concert of the 1961-62 season, Sunday afternoon, April 1, at 4 o'clock in Severance Hall. Agifted young Cleveland pianist, William Appling, will be soloist in a program entitled 'The Jazz Influence.Shaw will trace the amalgamation of the Jazz idiom’s unique beat with a more formal structure in a musical survey of five works by outstanding 20th century composers.'The Jazz Influence gets underway with a performance of music from the ballet ‘T-a Creation du Monde by France's Darius Milhaud. After the firstof his many extended visits to the United States, Milhaud decided to write a piece which embodied the jazz spirit employing an orchestra similar to those heard in Harlem. ‘1made, the composer has written, wholesale use of the jazz style to convey a purely classical feeling.Next on the program are excerpts from Igor Stravinsky's “LTiistoire du Soldat, a fable , to be recited, played and danced. ‘The Soldier’s Tale is sprinkled with Jazz tunes. 'The music, said Mr. Shaw, is terse, pungent, satirical and utterly delightful when played simply as music. This work by the late master of symphonic-jazz is the best loved and most frequently performed serious American composition in the entire literature for orchestra.William Appling made his Cleveland Orchestra debut lastspring in five Children's Concerts. A total of 10,000youngsters heard him perform the Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue” under the baton of Robert Shaw.The 29-year-old Clevelanderis a member of the faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music and is director of choral musicat Glenvtlle High School.Earlier this month, Appling played the Mozart A major Pianc Concerto, K. 488, withthe Western Reserve UniversityChamber Orchestra.
