MEDAL OF HONOR MAN IS STRICKENi Captured Confederate Flag In Face of Withering Fire, Suitably Rewarded.MEMBER OF LOCAL POSTDaniel P. Reigie III but Few Hours. Resident of Near East Berlin Found Dead in his Chair.Daniel P. Reigie, veteran of the Civil War, and well known resident of the county, died at 10:40 Monday i night at his home in Cumberland township along the Carlisle road, near Gettysburg. Mr. Reigie was stricken with apoplexy between five and six o’clock in the evening and lingered only a few hours. Before that time he had been in his usual health and doing his customary work about the place.During the war Mr. Reigie distinguished himself by his bravery and earned the much coveted medal of honor. On October 22nd, 1864, General Sheridan ordered him to report to Washington for the purpose of having presented to him by President Lincoln this medal “for marked bravery displayed on the battlefield on the evening of October 19th, near Middletown, Virginia, and for gallantly rushing forward through a terrific fire and capturing a. Rebel flag, at the stone fence where the enemy's last stand was made”. Mr. Reigie was also given for these exhibitions of noble daring a furlough of thirty five days to enable him to visit his home.Mr. Reigie was aged 76 years and 1 month. He was born near Littles-town and spent his entire life in that part of the county until about four years ago when he moved to Gettya-burg. He was a life long member of St James Reformed church, near Life, tlestown.At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in one of the companies of the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteers and served through practically the entire campaign. He was color sergeant folds regiment. Mr: Reigie was a member of Corporal Skelly Post 9, G. A. R. and was much interested in aH Grand Army matters.Mrs. Reigie, whose maiden name was Miss Savilla Degroft, died about fourteen months ago, and he leaves four children'; Mrs, Reuben Rupp, of Gettysburg; Mrs. Harry Stouffer, of Taney town; Miss Anna Reigie and Miss Ida Reigie at home. He also* leaves three grandchildren.Three sisters survive: Mrs. Jamee Snyder, of Littlestown; Miss Susan Reigie, of Manchester, Md.; and Mrs. Beniah Bankert, of Melrose, Md.; also-a step brother and a step sister, William Reigie, of Littlestown, and Mrs. John Hull, of Kingsdale.Funeral services at the house at noon on Friday conducted by his pastor, Dr. F. S. Lindaman. Interment* in the family lot at Mt. Carmel cemetery, Littlestown, conducted by the Grand Army Post of Gettysburg.
