METHODISTS HAVE BEEH ORGANIZED 0VEJJJ25 YEARSThe first Methodist church in Harrisonburg was erected in 178!». This church was erected on the present site of the Church of the Brethren on ttie West Water street hill. This was perhaps the first organized Methodist congregation in Rockingham.The second church on the hill was erected following plans made in 18U5. This was used as a lions'- cl worship until 1852 and after that became a drilling place Tor military c, m.ianies on the eve ot the War Between the States.Following the separation into bran ches North and South -of (In* Metht* dist Episcopal church in 1844. the twt congregations, worshiped for a few' years in the ‘‘old church on the hill,” hut in 1850, the Southern branch be. gau the erection of a new church at the northwest corner of Mr nee and Herman streets. The site .of the church wan afterwards changed to North German street, where Andrew' Chapel, a neat two^tory brlrfc {building. now occupied by the John fyesley M. K. Church (colored) atatlds at present.
