caught. The fireman, -issisted by the citizens generally got the flames in check at this point and drove them back from the 'Lankford building and held them in the Ornm and Kivlighan buildidg. Here the fight was kept np all night and at half past three o’clock this morning the Crum building was still burning fiercely. The back walls of the Ornm fcui iding fell outward at about two o'clock.All night long the interior r.f the block was a mass of blazing rains. There was little danger from this, however, and the fireman were working like Trojans on the bnildings on Middiebrook avenne and managed to keep the advantage they • had gained.So far as is known no one was injured although many had tiarrow escapes in the early pt.rt of the night from falling electric wires, and later from toppling walls.Seveial walls f-*11 over on Johnson street abont oneo’slock and there was a great d^ging cf filing bricks. The flames melted the eieo-tric wires along Johnson street soon after the fire got a good head wav and these were a decided menace to the firemen and spectators. The Staunton Electric oompany shot off its current in the district affected by the fire as 'promptly as possible and the cnrrent was also turned off the wires of the city's street lighting service.
