NE very mild and beautiful win ter has nearly passed away, and here we are now in the middle of March. No sign of any seals up to die, but we are in hopes of hav ing a chance to “ grease our ropes” yet. All we want is a few days. In winds. NOTHING of any importance has oc curred here the winter. But stay! rum our has just reached us that a young man—Frenke—of “ blood-thirsty”—fame attempted to clear out Fogo Harbor with a sealing gun. ‘Ihe desperado has been arrested, and without any pressing” from Magistrate Malcolm has been in duced to spend the next 30 days as a guest of Her Majesty's jailor. A SPLENDID concert was given in the S. U. F. Hall the latter part of Feb ruary. Without any exaggeration, we can safely say it was one of the finest entertainments held here for a long time. Space would not permit me to mention the different actors and the way the sev eral parts were played, but each one was up to the mark. Special mention must be made of Mr. N. J. Earle and his sons. Mr. Earle has been untiring in bringing this concert to a success. The sum of $35, which was collected, will be devoted to the erection of a Parish Hall for Fogo. We are always pleased to see Mr. F.C. Earle, of Change Islands, on the plat form, and it is safe to say ‘ Skipper Charlie” was the comedian of the even ing. THE ladies of Fogo have received a communication from Lady McCallum in to the collecting of money for the pur pose of making clothes, c., for our brave soldiers at the front. A meeting was held here on Tuesday last, and the following ladies were elected to act:— President, Mrs. H. J. Earle;treasurer, Mrs. (Rev.) Wilson; Secretary, Mrs. H. J. Lind. We are sorry to admit that Fogo was very backward in showing en thusiasm at the relief of Kimberley and Ladysmith, ‘ Not a gun was heard.” WE hope some of our young friends will liven up” and get thee old cannon under way and make the hills re-echo the sounds of patriotism and loyalty on the—we feel sure—not far off day that the British soldiers shall march trium phantly into Pretoria. Where are our young men who sang so lustily and proudly, “Soldiers of the Queen” and “Rule Brittania ? Come, boys, don't be backward. Get your guns and show everybody that if you are not ‘soldiers of the Queen,” you are at least true sub jects of the Queen. Fogo, March 14, 1900,
