Unlike most fire scene debris, Fesler noted that “this debris” will not be cast aside without first being sifted and screened for possible gems and other val uables that may be contained in it. The sifting scene, under standably, is not being dis closed. About Tuesday, Chief Fesler estimated that the area will begin to exhibit a “complete clean-up” picture, making the rebuilding phase of the city’s most costly fire loss the next item on the recovery agenda. About Monday, Fesler said he expected the embers would be cool enough to permit inspec tion for the possible cause of the blaze that originated in the Campus Bowl bowling alley in the downstairs area of the cor ner Deming Block building. Joining Fesler in the fire cause search next week will be Bernard Sweeney of the State Fire Marshal’s office and Capt. Norvin Erne, Lt. Sam Short and Inspector Faul Huff of the local fire department. Uncover Large Safe. A large safe in the basement of the Hillman Jewelers Inc. building, located in the heart of the fire scene, was uncovered late Friday afternoon, reported ly surounded by some four feet of water. Chief Riddle said firemen proceeded early Saturday to pump away the water. Hillman officials are anxious to open the safety device to determine the condition of the contents. Earlier Friday, another Hill man fire-protected safe, report edly containing precious stones and valuable company records and accounts receivable, was un erthed in the flooded basement area. Elsewhere in the piles of debris, masonry and twisted steel, attorney Victor Aldridge Jr. located portions of his firm’s legal files, the firm of Causey and Aldridge. Similarly, Ken dall Hayhurst, public account ant for a number of large Terre Haute corporations, reportedly salvaged most of the volumi nous and irreplacable records he at first thought were lost to the fire. Protection barriers have also been constructed around the Wabash avenue entrance of the Root Store. The precautionary measure was taken Friday, al though an inspection of the glass block facade head labelled it secure. The inspection was prompted by the falling of several of the blocks, apparent ly loosened by the extreme heat to which the building front was subjected as the fire raged uncontrolled for some eight hours. As Mayor Ralph Tucker and his officials stayed close to the scene, discussing clearance, re building measures and pro cedures with property owners, more offers of outside assist ance were forthcoming from Washington, D. C., from where Terre Hautean Birch E. Bayh Jr. had already telephoned his U. S. Senatorial aide in every possible way.
