CHARGE OF FALSE PRETENCES*On Saturday, at the Weston-super-Mare Police-court, before Messrs. Mullins, Bat ti scorn be, Hunt, Brown, and Harvey, Max Muller was charged onremand with having obtained by means of false and fraudulent pretences ther sum of £11 6s., the property of Sebastian J. Selliek, tailor; c., of Weston-super-Mare. Mr. R. It. Vaehell (instructed by Mr. RogersFord) appeared for the prosecutor, and the defendantwas represented by Mr. E. J. Pillers, of Bristol. Prom counsel's opening statement, it appeared thatin the year 1887 prisoner and his wife resided at Worthing with a Mr. James Baber, to whom onleaving he was indebted in. a sum of nearly £300. On being pressed for payment prisoner assigned toBaker a policy of assurance effected on the life of his (Muller’s) wife in liquidation of such liability. InJanuary of the present year it appeared that prisoner incurred a slight debt with prosecutor, and in order to meet this signed a document assigning to the creditor (Sellick) the policy above referred to. The transaction was, of course, ineffectual, on accountof the previous assignment to Baker, but Muller explained at the time that the non-production of the policy was due to its being in the temporary custodyof Mr. Fillers, of Bristol. Under prosecutor’s arrangement with Muller he advanced the sum of money forming the basis of the present proceedings. Themoney, however, was *o advanced upon Muller’srepresentations that Mr. Fillers, of Bristol, wasdesirous of purchasing the interest in the policy for£100, but he (Muller) preferred to give prosecutor the opportunity of securing the same. Considerableevidence was adduced in support of counsel's opening statement, after which Mr. Pillers stated that he should bo able to produce certain correspondence which would exculpate his client from the accusation preferred. In the absence of the original letters, however, Mr. Vachelt sustained an objection to theoroduction of other than the originals. Mr* Pillers, under these circumstances, reserved his defence, andprisoner was committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions.
