Those of Our citizens who failed to hear the speech of this distinguished Kentucky I soldier, at the Melodeon in this ei'y, on Thursday, have lost a treasure which can never be regained. The time, the occasion, the crcum-taiices and the mir., all conspired to render it one of the most significant and important efforts that the present terrible crisis of the nation’s history has called forth. The occasion was the presentation to him of a splendid sword, sash, pistols and spurs, suitable to his rank, by a portion of our fellow-ctizecs; but instead of its being a mere common-plaee acknowledgment of such a compliment, it proved to be one of the highest efforts of a patriot fully imbued with that devotion 1o his country i which* patriotism alone engenders—of a statesman whose capacbua mind grasps the momeotous questions of the hour—and of a soldier who has imperiled his life upon innumerable ba'tle fields in defense of that glorious Government which was handed diwn to us by our ancestor as a legacy of blood.
