Several area schools took to the cinders yesterday to kick off the 1972 track season. Wellsville hosted a quadrangular meet and wound up in a tie for the win with Baldwin. Gardner was close behind while De Soto was back in the running to round out the four-team field. Wellsville and Baldwin each totaled 85 points in their quest for the win while Gardner had 75. De Soto could manage only 22. Wellsville boasted eight first place finishes in the meet, while Baldwin had only seven but made Edwards takes medalist honors NORMAN, Okla, (AP) — Ok lahoma State’s Danny Edwards took the medalist honors with an even par 144 and led the Big Eight Cowboys to the cham pionship in the two-day Sooner Invitational golf tournament here Tuesday. — Edwards’ total just edged teammate Jim Ahern for the top individual performance. Ahern had 145 and another Cowboy, Ted Goin, tied for third with Texas’ Brent Buck man with 147. Ahern had the low score for Tuesday with a 71. Team Scoring — Oklahoma State 585, Oklahoma 604, Texas 607, Wichita State 615, Oral Roberts 634, Central, Okla., 645, Oklahoma City University 640, Tulsa University 642, Cameron, Okla., 643, Oklahoma Baptist 647. The top - scorers: Danny Edwards, Oklahoma State, 70.74— Ian Jim Ahern, Oklahoma State, 74.71—145 Ted Goin, Oklahoma State, 7).76—147 Brent Buckman, Texas, 72-75—147 Gary Navarro, Wichita State, 74-74—148 Dewayne Tilley, Oklahoma, 7673—149 Henry DeLozier, Oklahoma State, 7474— 9 David Barr, Oral Roberts, 71-78—149 Bob Stephenson, Oklahoma, 78.72—150 Johnny Dill, Texas, 75.75—150 Bruce Maddux, Central State, 73.77—150 up for the shortcoming in seconds and thirds. Gardner, under the direction of Lowell Hoch, took four first places; Luther Watson, won the triple jump, he leaped 38'3 ’. Jeff Kelly won the two-mile run, with a 11:22.8 clocking and Steve Dyer won the 880 yard run in a 2:12.8 timing. The Trailblazers’ 880 relay team took their other first; they posted a 1:41.2 time. The team was made up of Bob Peacock, Paul Grahovac, Luther Watson and John Stephens. Gardner had five second place finishes; they were second in the medley relay, and the mile relay. Luther Watson was second in the broad jump, Gary Sharp was second in the pole vault and Wess Fargo was second in the discus. De Soto had only one second in the Meet, Bill Plummer was second in the 440 yard dash. Gardner will get a second shot at the Wellsville team next Tuesday when the two teams meet at Santa Fe Trail for a triangular.
