!MAY BE SOMETHINB IN THIS.Reported Extension of the Milwaukee From Evarts, S. I), to Helena, Mont., yin the IJlark Hills. The Pierre Free Press recently contaiued some comment regarding the Milwaukee extension from Evart, Walworth county west of the river through the Indian reservation to Montana and the Black Hills. There seems to bo plenty of confirmatory evidence that this extension is a go this year, and the people who are interested iu seeing the Hills country and the eastern part of the state connected with one or more lines look on this evidence with gratification. The Aberdeen News has this to say regardihg the Milwaukee project:Ever since the News last summer suggested the probability that the Milwaukee road would extend its line across the Missouri from Evarts and run west, tapping the northern Black Hills and going into the wonderfully rich cattle country out towards the Rocky Mountains there have been persistent rumors that the line would be commenced this spring. Recently different parties of officials of the ruud and men who were said to be interested in stock have gone over the line to Evarts and thence west into the reservation country, and it is now believed that instead of looking at the cattle industry on the west side of the Missouri they were looking over the ground for the new p-oposed line. Officials of the company interviewed ou the subject have denied any knowledge of such an intention on the a part of the company, but the Chicago Record on Saturday said: βIt was semi officially reported yesterday that the St. Paul would soon set about to begin the construction of the proposed line from Evarts, S. D., to Helena, Mont.A Helena, Mont., dispatch of the 12th, adds to the information in the matter. It reads as follows. The recent reports of the probable construction of a new branch of the Milwaukee road from Evarts, S. D., to Helena is confirmed by railroad officials here. The construction and the extension is looked upon as one growing out of strained traffic conditions. The recent issue of $10,000, 000 additional stock of the Milwaukee has gi/en color to this rumor, and it is said that the Milwaukee road has practically been forced to build these lines to protect itself in competing for through business. The close trafic alliance between the Burlington and the Northern Pacific has cut off from the Milwaukee and St. Paul, at the Twin cities, the larger proportion of the transcontinental traffic originating with the Northern Pacific.
