San Antonio's Tejano MusicAwards celebrated its 10th anniversary this month, with a veteran band and a newcomer group grabbing half of the prizes awarded.The awards ceremony may bringnational prominence to Emilio Navaira Rio Band, a San Anto-nio-based act nominated for aGrammy earlier this year though virtually unknown outside of Texas. Navaira's group was named most promising band and won the album of the year, con-junto category. Additionally, Navaira was the winner of male entertainer honors.Veteran Grupo Mazz also earned three awards. It won song of the year, while bandleaders Joe Lopez and Jimmy Gonzalez were named vocal duo of the year” for the fourth time in five years. Lopez additionally received the songwriter of the yearaward, upsetting Luis Silva, who had won the past six years.The group Latin Breed won album of the year and song ofthe year.Corpus Christi's Selena Quintanilla was named female entertainer and female vocalist, both for the second year in a row.David Marez was named malevocalist and Paulino Bernal got the Tejano gospel music artist award. Two Puerto Rican actors-Rita Morena and Esai Morales-hosted the awards ceremony, held March 9 at the city's ConventionCenter Arena. The event, which doubles as a scholarship fundraiser, was produced by the Texas Talent Musicians Association.
