Coe College will open its 1985 softball season on March 21 against Loras College in Dubuque. Their first home ap pearance will be April 8 against Dubuque. The 1984 team won the Midwest Conference for the fourth straight year with a 9-1 record. The overall record for the Kohawk team was 18-8 against some very difficult com petition. Coe returns with eleven let terwinners from the champion ship team and all but one starter including three all-conference selections and two who were named to Western Region teams. Nancy Kahle, pitcher and designated hitter, was named all-conference for the second time and was the only unani mous choice on the 1984 team. She batted .279 while winning eleven games and losing two. Also named all-conference for the second year was Diane Meyer, third baseman, who bat ted .284 and was a Western Region second-team selection. Phonathon Raises 68,000 Nearly 200 student volun teers participated in the annual Coe College Phonathon this year, which ended last Thurs day after an extensive two-week campaign. During the two-week period, approximately 4,000 alumni were contacted, resulting in a grand total of $68,113.50, more than $2000 greater than last year’s total. The Alpah Omicron Pi Sorori ty won the group prize of $100. They raised $12,733, while the Sigma Nu Fraternity was second with $12,662.50. Individual priz es were also awarded to the top three individual callers. Kevin Novreske received a Stouffer’s Brunch for 4 for the most money with $7,532. Peggy Politsch was awarded a dinner for two at The Carvery for the most pledges earned with 46, and Todd Kafka received a gift certificate from The Amalgamated Spirit and Provision Co. for the highest success rate of calling with 55%. David Ostrander, Amy Engle bert, and the Development Of fice thank all the students who volunteered their considerable time and efforts to make 1984- 1985 Phonathon a success. Carla Gibney, sophomore sec ond baseman from Norway, IA was also picked for the all conference team, batting .286 and fielding .914. Kathy McGuire, shortstop from Mediapolis, IA was a Western Region team member batting .282 and fielding .914. Other returnees include Cor rine Yogi, senior pitcher from Pearl City, HI, a 1983 all conference pick, who was 4-0 in conference competition last year and 5-3 overall. Completing the infield is first baseman Kim Russ of Aurora, IL, with a batting average of 309. Theresia Pallischeck from Muscatine brings experience to the catcher position. Tracey Athey, Springville, IA and Marirose Pusateri, Du buque, IA are both veterans in the outfield. A number of fine freshmen, including Stacy liams and Kristi Loftus, former Cedar Rapids Kennedy standouts, will help the Kohawks in their quest for a fifth-straight championship. Head Coach Bob Thurness, beginning his fourth year at the helm of the Kohawk softball team holds a 51-26 overall record. In his three years here has coached eleven first-team all- Midwest Conference selections, two Division III NCAA Western Region team members, and one All-American. Coe plays their home games on the recently completed soft ball complex one block east of Eby Fieldhouse.
