GoodmanMay Bring New Band to CampusProm Possibility». — _Dr. #aldron Resigns Chairmanship Of student Admissions CommitteeContracts with Benny Goodman have yet to be signed, Keith Me-Candiess, chairman of the Junior From, said this afternoon. “The R. F. I. Polytechnic” reported earlier this week that hoth the Union Junior Prom Committee and the R, P. I. Soiree Committee had signed the bands for appearance on May 9 and May 10.The contracts are in the hands of the New York managers of Goodman’s orchestras. As yet no definite word has come through and the committee is still in the dark whether Goodman will play here or not that weekend. The R. P. I. paper said Wednesday that the Prom Committee had signed with Goodman. McCandless called their story ' premature,” saying that negotiations might meet a hitch.Bermy Goodman, virtuoso of the claiinet, and his widely acclaimed band, which was reorganized anc rejuvenated last fall, may be signed to play at the Junior Prom chairman Keith McCandless announced today. He replaces Jimmy Doisey, who broke contracts signed wkh Union and R. P. I, a week and a half ago when the Strand Theatre in New York signed a prior option. Goodman may play at the R.PJ. Sophomore Soiree May 10, the evening following his Union appearance.•Chairman McCandless said that the combined prom and soiree committees would score a distinct coup when they engaged Goodman’s new band. He has been sought by colleges throughout the country since he enlarged his orchestra. He would come to Union after a series of highly successful engagements at Northwestern University', Cornell, Princeton, University of Michigan, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Goodman's new orchestra is creating something of a sensation since it was organized in the fall of 1940. Only three weeks after his new band made its appearance, Goodman was at the top of popularity polls conducted by leading music magazines such as “Down-Beat,” “Orchestra World,” “Metronome,” and “Swing.” He was recently elected King of Swing, an honor which is not new to him, by “Metronome and “Down-Beat.Benny GOodman’s new band is a result of nearly a summer of planning and careful selection of personnel. An outstanding feature of his top-notch outfit is his new Sextet, which replaces his former quintet, and which includes trumpeter Coctie Williams and Charlie Christian on the electric guitar.Dr. Charles N. Waldron has re-'1 linquished the post of Director of Admissions to give his full time to alumni relationships, President Fox said in a statement issued to “The Concordiensis” -today.Dr1. Fox’s statement read: “Dr. Charles N. Waldron, by his own suggestion will henceforward give all his time to alumni relations. The position of Chairman of the' Committee on Admissions, usually known as “Director of Admissions,” which is thus left vacant, will be filled by Frederic A. Wyatt. I think it is in point to say that no drastic modification of standards or methods is expected to ensue from this change. Policy, of course, will continue in the immediate charge of the Committee on Admissions.“Dr. Waldron’s administration of the admissions office since 1933 has brought great benefit to Union College. The institution’s present reputation for the sound and consistent application of high standards in the selection of its students is largely due to his wisdom and courage. In his conferences with prospective students and their parents he has always presented a clear and fair picture of the Union College opportunity for the individual in question, and thereby has contributed to the good opinion which the College enjoys. Fortunately, in his alumni office, he is close at hand for consultation in admissions problems.Dr. Waldron Alumni Contact“Union College has about 6500 alumni. For thirty years Dr. Waldron has been the chief means of personal contact between the college and its academic sons. As the number grows the burden of this responsibility grows with it, and obviously needs an increasing amount of time. Moreover, in the difficult days which colleges are going to face, the relations with alumni must be close, if the securities of present college position, to say nothing of advances, are to be maintained. Therefore, while remaining as Secretary of the College, Dr. Waldron will give full time to these alumni concerns.“Mr. Wyatt has had eight years as Assistant Director of Admissions, and is thoroughly familiar with policies and practices of the office. He will continue to act as Director of the Placement Bureau.”Frederic Wyatt, the new admissions head, will move from his position in the entry to Dr. Waldron’s old office. The admissions office will be changed so that entry will now be directly from the hallway.
