This silent river, the Maumee, received its name from the Valley of Maumee, through whioh it liends and turns like a huge serpent, wriggling towards the distant lake.About ten miles above the rapids of the river there are numerous beautiful little islands covered with a den«e growth of bushes and willow trees, which droop gracefully to the waters edge. In the evening when the moon Inner glorious beauty, rends the veil of darkness, these island* seem to rise from beneath the water, and gaze in silent wonder on our Bleeping world.— Then as the moon retreats timidly behind a passing cloud, they slowly disappear like the phantom island, in the gloom of the night.This scene on the panorama of nature is frequently repeated, and the eye would fain seek some new wonder, when the soft dip of the oar Is beard. The moon shines clear upon the water, discovering a fisherman and his boy bending to the oars of their light boat, which scarcely disturbs the water’s glassy surface, and your thoughts are carried hack to the time when with the long double paddle, the Miami brave sped along on the river, chanting the war song of Ids nation.In fancy you see Mad Anthony at the head of his Ohio and Kentucky legions, sweep down like a dark tornado or* the Maumee's banks, to where Turkey Font and ids warriors made their last stand behind the fallen timbers. Filled with these recollections of the post you tin n regretfully and walk homeward.
