By M. A. Nyquist Herald Staff Negrych Pioneer Homestead has made it to the second round of the Must-See-Ums Madness contest through Travel Manitoba. Sharon Basaraba, councillor for Rural Municipality of Gilbert Plains is pleased the origi nal Ukrainian pioneer farm site is included in the contest. “It is the most complete and preserved Ukrainian farmstead in Canada,” she said, noting the home of Wasyl and Anna Negrych has 10 buildings. The buildings have several rare features, Basaraba said, such as the only Canadian example of a long shingle Carpathian roof and a fully preserved peech, or clay cook oven, in the bunkhouse. The Negrych family came to Canada from Berezin village in the Kolomyja region of west ern Ukraine and built their main house in 1899, she explained, which is still in excellent condition. “All the buildings are there. There is a bunkhouse, there’s the barns, there are some granaries,” Basaraba said, noting was also a large orchard, which has not survived. The site is managed by the RM of Gilbert Plains, she said, which has taken over from the Gilbert Plains and District Historical Society. It is important to main tain the provincially and federally designated her itage site, Basaraba added, to educate youth about the past. “It’s so important for them to learn how their ancestors lived,” she affirmed. The contest initially had 32 museums listed and there are five rounds in the competition. Voters are allowed one vote in each round and participants are invited to cast a vote online. Negrych Pioneer Homestead moved on to second round, by gaining more votes than Le Musée de St. Pierre. Winners of the contest will earn a free promo tional video worth $5,000, courtesy of Travel Manitoba. “T thinks it’s probably a really good promotion for everyone that’s on there, even if we don’t win,” Basaraba said. Fort Dauphin Museum was also in the contest, but was knocked out in the first round, losing to Minnedosa Museum and Heritage Village To vote, visit Must- See-Ums Madness at trav elmanitoba.com.
