To Be In Charge of Animous Alumnus. Samuel ‘W. Stratton, a graduate in the class of '84, has been appointed by the President of the United States to be chief of the new Bureau of Stand ards to be established within a short time. The object of the new bureau as stated in the act of Congress is as fol lows: “That the functions of the bureau shall consist in the custody of the standards;the comparison of the stand ards used in scientific investigations, engineering, manufacturing, commerce and educational institutions, with the standards adopted or recognized by the government; the construction, when necessary, of standards, their multiples and subdivisions; the testing and cali bration of standard measure appara tus; the solution of polems which arise in connection with standards; the determination of physical constants and the properties of materials, when such data are of great importance to scientific or manufacturing interests and are not to be obtained of sufficient accuracy elsewhere.” Mr. Stratton was an instructor in mathematics during the years 95-'97, and afterwards became an assistant professor of Physics in Chicago Uni versity. The new position to which he has been appointed carries with it a salary of $5,000 per year. The labora tory for the use of the bureau is to be constructed at a cost of $250,000.
