“ Mother Allen.”—Jftstrs. Edilort Prtst and Tribunt:—I have just read an article in your paper of to day, concerning the attempt of*officer Darker to arrest the distinguished individual above uamed. The writer of that article charges the woman with being a hag, an infamous procuress, Ac. Permit me to criticise the spirit and tenor of your editorial, and to enter myfimtest against all attempts like that of Mr. iarker to arrest accused persons in other States without warrant. 1 beliere the woman Allen is yet unconvicted of even an attempt to commit a crime. She is,therefore, presumed to be innc-cent. Is it right to denounco her until convict* cd? Is is not abominable for a Republican p iper, considering the utterly defenceless condition of the class to which this woman btlongs, os against the claims of the slave trailers, to utter such a sentiment as the concluding paragraph of the article referred to. Does the Press and TiunrxE subscribe to the doctrine that it is only necessary to raise the hue and cry referred to, to justify the people of South Rend to thrust any'poor colored woman out of their borders, and into the hands ! of the first ruffian like Charles 'oyes who may gnply for the custody of such person!A Void in regard to the charge against this woman. I, Ja it certain that she should be judged by the same standard of morals as if she had b**en brought up in a Christian or civilized country? Her education was obtained ia a country where the marriage relation is almost unknown to her class, not from any ind«Ip08*t*0n on the part of her people to observe the decencies of life in this regard, but from a contemptuous determination on the part of the white oppressors of her race to ignore the possibility of chastity in the black. It is unnecessary to follow up tbo train of thought sug-?:csted 6y a statement of the simple facts, teasoning “after the manner of men,” does this woumn owe any considerable debt to tho virtue of her white sisters?
