NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Perry Clark took Tulane’s basketball program from the ashes of a point shaving scandal to national rankings and the NCAA tour nament in just three years, and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association has named him Coach of the Year. Tulane President Eamon Kelly suspended the men’s basketball pro gram for four seasons after the point shaving conspiracy and allegations of NCAA recruiting violations. Clark's first team after the program was revived finished 4-24. His second went 15-13, and this year’s team is 21-8, regular-season Metro Conference champion and enjoying its first NCAA berth in school history, Tulane meets St. John’s Friday in the opening round of the Southeast Regional at Atlanta. ‘There is no question that Perry Clark has done an outstanding job,” said Joe Mitch, executive director of USBWA. “To turn a school's fortunes around like he has done is a remarkable ac complishment.” Clark was an assistant at Georgia Tech when he was hired in July 1988 to revive the program He said the USBWA award was an honor he will always cherish. ‘I thank Dr. Kelly for giving me the chance to coach at Tulane, my staff for doing a tremendous job of preparation, and the players for believing in our system,” Clark said
