Stagg high school Dean James Arneberg will be reappointed to his present position for the 1979-80 school year, Principal Dr John Sheehy announced Thursday.Noting that “we must have a smoothly-functioning deans’ office” to maintain discipline within a high school, Dr Sheehy reversed his earlier decision to remove the popular dean from his post.Arneberg greeted the news of his reappointment with an exclamation. “I’m thrilled, particularly in light of the support rallied by the kids, teachers and parents,” he said.ARNEBERG HAS been a central figure in a controversy concerning the deterioration of discipline at the Palos Hills school. The Star-Herald disclosed February 18 that Stagg was suffering from a backup of disciplinary referrals numbering into the thousands, and quoted present and former staff members as stating discipline had broken down at the schoolAmong the more prominent targets of criticism were policies implemented by Dr. Sheehy and Consolidated High School District 230 Superintendent Dr Donald Pecken-paugh.Arneberg specifically named the two administrators as those responsible for instituting “unworkable” disciplinary policies at the schoolFollowing publication of his coming of opinion influenced his position on the Arneberg appointment. “I have given careful thought to the appeals of students and others concerning my recommendation that James Arneberg not be appointed dean at Stagg high school I have reconsidered and decided that I should give him another opportunity to function as dean,” Dr Sheehy said.Seemingly acknowledging the conflict which has developed between himself and Arneberg, Dr Sheehy added, “We will renew our attempts to solve our differences.Arneberg expressed confidence that discipline at the school could be restoredHE NOTED an ad hoc committee on discipline was finalizing its report for presentation to Dr. Sheehy Adding that he served as a resource person for the group, Arneberg said the committee’s recommendations call for specific, tough penalties to be imposed on students breaking established rules.Arneberg said many of the recommendations closely follow a discipline policy drafted by board of education members in January, 1978, but later changed.“That policy specified a penalty for every infraction,” he saidDr. Sheehy said the final recommendation on discipline, along with recommendations from a similar ad hoc committee on attendance policy, would be referred to Dr Peck enpaugh for further studyments, Arneberg was informed by Dr Sheehy he would not be reappointed to his post next fall.
