Romero in race for sheriff’s jobBelen Police Sgt. Lawrence Ko mero has announced his intentions to seek the Republican nomination for Valencia county sheriff. This is the second time Romero, 33, has attempted to win the sheriffs office. In 1974 he trailed current Sheriff Nick P. Sanchez by 1,076 votes. A total of 12,617 votes were cast in that election.“The sheriffs office is the No. 1 law enforcement agency in any county and I feel it should be run in an organized and efficient manner that best protects the citizens, Romero said.Romero, his wife Hazel, son Lawrence Jr.. 6, and daughter Lisa, 10, all reside south of Helen. Romero has served as sergeant on the Belen force for the past four of his five years on the force. He has also served as Bernalillo County Sheriffs deputy in Albuquerque's South Valley, an undersheriff for the Socorro County Sheriff department and a policeman in Socorro. In all, Romero said, he has served 11 years in law enforcement.Romero lists to his credit gradu ation from the Law Enforcement Agency in Santa Fe and courses in pursuit driving, credit card fraud, fingerprinting, first aid training and traffic accident investiagion. Along with these, Romero is an instructor for defensive driving.Part of Romero’s platform is, You don’t demand respect, you earn it. Romero said he will want “dedicated, well trained deputies who would perform a professional job that would bring respect needed for the top county law enforcement agency. He also sees a need for an investigation squad. It has become an extreme must for the sheriffs office to initiate aninvestigationsquad because of the unfortunate disban ding of the (Eastern Valencia County) Metro Squad. Valencia County is still No. 1 in serious crimes per capita in New Mexico and I feel that through hard work and dedication, this terrible record can Ik* lessened.Mayor Neel Alexander said of Romero that he has “proved (to be) an excellent officer for the Belen PoliceFi ••orce.Belen Police Chief Jck* P. (iabaldon said he is devoted to police work and City Manager Richard Aagon said that he has been an asset to our Police Department.LAWRENCE ROMERO
