James G. N. Fites, son of An drew M. and Anna M. Fites, was born in Fredrick Co., Md., April 12, 1842; passed away at his home in Perry township, March 15, 1920, aged 77 years, 11 months and 8 days. When a Ind of thirteen years he came with his parents to Miami county and settled on the farm owned by Arthur Ward and this vicinity has been his home ever since. That gave him a practical ex perience of the privations and hardships of pioneer life. On the 31st day of August 1862 he answered his country’s call to arms and enlisted in the 87th regi ment of Indiana Volunteers. On account of disability on December 1, 1863, he received a Surgens discharge. He reinlisted in the 155th regiment March 28, 1865, received an honorable discharge August 4, 1865, after which he re turned to his father’s home. On January 1, 1867, he was united in marriage to Isabel I. Olds. To this union were born five children: Eliza J. Rudd, of Mansfield, Washington; Richard, who’s home has been with his par ents; Albert, and Elva Guise, of Hammond, Ind.; and Elmer, who resides on the old homestead. The wife and mother and all the chil dren are present today except Eli za. His sister, Aunt Mary Butt, is the sole surviving member of his father’s family of thirteen chil dren. Thirteen grandchildren, one great grandchild and many rela tives and friends are left to mourn his departure. About forty-eight ago he united with the M. E. Class at Ebenezer under the pastorate of R. J. Smith and all the years since he has been a faithful attendant. His life has been an open book before this community. The funeral services were held at Ebenezer Tuesday afternoon.
