Death of Mrs. Hammond. Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Hammond, wid ow of the late John Hammond, died at the residence of her son-in-law, John Irvin, Tuesday morning, of paralysia of the heart. Her age was 72 years. Mrs. Hammond had enjoyed excellent health until some two years since, when she suffered an attack of sickness, and since that time has been in a decline. Her last illness was of about three weeks duration. She was born in Fleming county, Kentucky, and came with her parents, the late Isaac and Margaret Mahan, to Greencastle in 1826, and had been a resident of this place continu ously since Feb. 9, 1830 she became the second wife of the late John Ham mond, who died May 24, 1871, their mar ried life covering a period of 41 years. There was born to Mr. Hammond, by his first wife, one daughter, who be came the wife of Gen. George K. Steele, of Rockville, now dead. In the second he had six children—Thomas C. Hammond; Margaret, wife of Nathan Hammond; Elizabeth Irvin, at whose home she died; A. J. Hammond, of Min dianapolis; Rezin Hammond, and Mrs. Julia Dunbar, wife of Maj. J.G. Dun bar. All survive, except Mrs. Dunbar, who died in 1878. When only 19 years cold Mrs. Ram mond joined the M. E. Church, but, owing to family cares and her numer ous duties in other directions, she was not received into full connection until Sunday, the 7th of this month, when Dr. Cissel, of College Avenue, visited her home for that purpose, at her request, and administered the ordinance of baptism. She was of a most amiable and gentle disposition, and was never known to do an unkind act. Her rec ognized spore of duty was her family, and her time and abilities were largely devoted to them. Subsequent to her hus band’s death she made her home with her daughter, Julia, until that lady’s death, and since then with her daugh ter, Elizabeth, who was a most faithful nurse, assisted by the rest of the fam ily. Of her father’s family, only two are living—Dr.Thomas Mahan, of Cal ifornia, and Col. John R. Mahan, of this city. Twenty-six grand-children and fourteen great-grand-children sur vive her, and six of her grandsons will act as pall-bearers at her funeral, which occurs this afternoon at 3 o'clock, Dr. Cissel officiating.
