Then the scramble tor the Harbour Master* thip began. Mr, Plewellhg presented two petitions. Mr, Poster presented the petition of a Mr. French, who offered to pay $150 nett on account of tho fees. * Mr. Foster pointed out that for years past the dues only paid the salary and a few dollars over. Mr. FieweU ling, afraid that Mr. Foster would get the start of him, said he was out of order. Some of the friends of other applicants'asked timp, that their clients also may make some such offer, and Mr. Galt proposed that the office ehould bs put up to public competition. The majority, however, wcTe of opinion that the proper coqrpe is to pay the officer a salary, and require him to collect and pay over the dues. Mr. French got a large vote but not a majority. Then the names of Mr. Mowrey, Mr. Edward Eagles, Mr. David Dunham were put. They received but few votes. Mr. Gilbert Purdy was the next in order, and on his nomination the Board divided, Was 26, Xsys 19, He was accordingly declared elected. The salary was fixed at $300 a year, the •mount hitherto paid. On motion of Mr. Tapley it was ordered that a quarter’s salary, $76, be paid the widow of the late Harbour Master. Mr. Hayward was appointed Harbour Master for Mutquash, and Mr. John McAnulty, Pilot.
