The town, having been evaluated by the inhabitan'g is, no doubt, in the'possession of the enemy.—6’ar. Republican JTerrible Railroad Accident—Scvcaly or Eighty Killed «ad Wounded.*By the arrival of passengers at Mobile we learn that a collision took place on Thursday last ou the New Oilcans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad near Ponchula, between the passenger up tiain filled with Mississippi soldiers, and a down train laden with lumber. It appea.s that the engineer of the passenger train saw thefreght train and reversed h seugine, and »nd was. backing, but lumber tr; id came on at full speed completely smashing up the first and third car, tho second not suffering much damage killing instantly over thirty persons, ami wounding betwet n forty und fifty others. The scene is dis* cribed as being most horrible. The bodies were laterally smashed into a jelly.The Dablgren Rifles, from Pike county,suffered most. It is thought that not more than twenty-five of their company escaped. I he Quitman Rifles also suffered very severely. It is positively stated that it was a premeditated act on the part of the engineers of the lumber train. It is said that just before the trains struck he put on all steam and jumped off and ran for tho wopds. The conductor, as soon as he could do so, also jumped oft’ and followed him, with pistol iu hand to shoot him, hut at last accounts he had not been caught, but we bear that he is being followed up
