The Sul Ross State University Lobos literally blew the College of the Southwest out of the Hobbs stadium 23-9 in opening action Friday as wind gusts approached 50 mph in the four-hour contest. The wind was so bad and the game lasted so long that the second game of the double header was postponed until Saturday morning. The Lobos took the first contest Saturday 9-4 before hitting some of the best pitching of the season in games three and four. In Friday’s action, the Lobos pick ed up their 23 runs on 23 hits. Opie Parsons led the way with four hits, three runs, three RBIs and one home run. Gus Alvarado, who has been hot for the last eight games, kept on rolling with three hits, three runs, four RBIs and a homer. Pete Serna came on for Jeff Price in the third to take his first college win. Serna shut out the Mustangs for four and one third innings as the Lobos came away with a 9-4 win. Jay Trees had three hits, and Brent Harris had a homer that brought in three runs. In the second Saturday game, the Mustangs were on top 4-1 when the Lobos came back to tie the score in the top of the seventh. Sul Ross held the Mustangs off in the bottom of the inning and then went ahead in the top of the eight 5-4. But the Mustangs broke open the game for the win by scoring two in their half of the inning, taking the contest 6-5. John Bowman had the hot bat, picking up three hits, including a double. Game four saw the Lobos go down 4-3, losing the game in the bottom of the seventh on a dropped ball. On the series, Alvarado had five hits, including two homers, that brought in six RBIs. Jay Trees had five hits. The Lobos will keep their bags packed as they head across the state for a spring-break tour that will see them take on St. Edwards University and the University of Texas in Austin and then to Brownwood for a conference series against Howard Payne University. The Lobos return to Kokernot Field April 15.
