“Those MBy ELIDA BEDELL.Mabel Normand a model? There aro many of us who have followed Miss Normand on her merry, mlBchiev'ous way through tho ’'movies'' and have wished that her appearances on the screen were more freq.uent.Many of us have known, perhaps, the general Information that is given, out by producing companies about their stars: that she was born in Boston, and began her screen career, as did so many of them, with the old Brograph company. There aren’t so many, though, who1 know that Mabel was once a pro-j fessional model, posing in the nude for artists for money enough to keep body and soul together, for her engagements were not so frequent In those days.Mabel Too Merry.Audrey Munson, queen of the studios,** who is writing such a revealing history in a New York newspaper of her life as a model and the lives of many others who frequented artists’ studios, gives out this information. She treats Miss Normand very kindly, it may be said for her.Mabel was not so successful, says Miss Munson, because of the merriness of her face and the generally mischievous contour of her features. She was chosen by Piccirilli, the great Italian sculptor, to pose for his statue ••Rain,” for tho perfection of her body. The posing for the face was done by Miss Munson. Tho statue earned much favorable comment at the exposition at San FYan-cisco. where it was exhibited.“When Piccirilli conceived his famous ‘Rain* for the exposition at San Francisco. writes Miss Munson, he wished to make his feminine figure representative of the sense-soothing quality or a gentle, steady downpour from the heavens. liain is not delicate, nor dainty, nor does it suggest firm reserved lines.
