And then rumor began industriously to |, circulate the report that others higher up than Jett or White or Britton and with more at stake and deeper motive were the real assassins, the men who inspired the bloody deeds and furnished the incentive by the payment of money and promise of immunity from punishment for past crimes. Little by little the terrible story was completed and at its conclusion Judge James Hargis. ex-Sen-ator Alexander Hargis, Elbert Hargis, Ed Callahan and others stood accused by public report of being the instigators of the crime. It is significant that these parties are now confined in the same cell of the Lexington jail in which Caleb Powers was incarcerated immediately after his arrest for alleged complicity in the Goebel assassination. They will he tried by a jury of Fayette county citizens impartially and fairly selected. That the crime, the instigation of which they are charged with being responsible, is as atrocious as any that marks the pages of the State’s history, there can be no question, but that is no reason why they should not be givencnaFUcfnnfoflt;tllcclt;hf!flh;ai01stt*nCCaias fair and impartial trial as any oth- 0fer citizen, regardless of political8€We (irlt;* nuthorized to annotwf** MACK COOK »»* a can did nt© for tli© offlc© of M«ffl«trali of th© • roiuwfll district. *ut»je©i to lb© artlnn of H©* j*utdk-iin party.faith or station in life is entitled to.
