The Voice, in discussing the advent of the “Mufti,” Muhammed A. R. Webb, who has come to this country to preach the Koran, says: ‘We have in this country six branches seven of Catholics, “two of Christians, seven teen of Lutherans, two of Episcopalians, twelve of Mennonities, sevoriteen of Methodists, twelve of Presbyterians, three Reformed, two United Brethren... We have ‘four branches. of the Quakers, four of the Dunkards, nine of the Communistic societies. We have two Jewish Churches, or “Congregations,” two Mormon Churches, forty Theosophical_societies, forty seven Chinese temples, 221 societies of Chris tian Scientists, 334 societies of spiritualists. We have 329 barracks of the Salvation Army and four societies for Ethical Culture. But we have as yet no Mohammedan mosques. Muhammed Alexander Russell ‘Webb has taken pity on is in our desolation, and he is now “in our midst,” prepared to give us a mosque and a Mohamme dan publishing house which shall scatter the Koran in English all over the land.” It adds: “As there are 73 sects of Mohammedans, we took for rivals to be in the field at an early date. All of them will find followers. We don’t believe that any ‘religion could ‘ber int t 4 or not event one in which the devil was worshiped -in fact, perhaps that one would be as popular as any in the big cities.” The Voice is right. In nothing has the ingenuity of the mind been more fully displayed than in in venting religions.
