Hon. W.C. Hobbs, of Fort Madison, will address the red ribbon temperance club at Mozart hall tonight. Mr. Hobbs is one of the most eloquent and forcible speakers in the country, and unlike many of our pro fesse temperance advocates, is not afraid to show his colors at all times and under all circumstances. We predict a crowded house on this occasion. The city engineer has prepared a map showing the proposed system of sewerage he will recommend the city council to adopt at the meeting tomorrow night. He has also prepared an ordinance to go with the sew erage system, which will also be presented. A system of some kind will be adopted, and we believe the report of the city engineer will meet all requirements. Theodore Minor and his wife who were arrested Friday for larceny applied for a change of venue from Judge Browning to Squire Catlett who will hear the preliminary examination. A.J. Hillhouse filed the in formation against the Minors and also against L. Grabel as an accessory. Garbel was arrested and brought to the city yester day. Justice Catlett allowed Mrs. Minor to go on her own recognizance, but Minor and Grabel were put under two thousand dollars bail and in default of giving the same were sent to jail. The preliminary examination will take place tomorrow morning. Mrs. Laura E. Dainty—March 24. The annual meeting of the Des Moines County Agricultural society was held yes terday afternoon in the office of the county auditor. The president being absent, Vice president Chamberlin acted as chairman. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, John Patterson ; vice-president, E. Chamberlin; secretary, C. M. Garman ; treasurer, (.C. Fowler; di rectors, C. E. Perkins, W. F. Johnson, David Leonard,Jerome Bock, A. J. Smith, Elli son Smith, G. R. Henry, C. Messenger. Some committees were appointed and the board adjourned until next Saturday, when the committees will report and the date will be fixed for the next fair. Mrs. Laura FE. Dainty—March 24. The clerk of the board of health has pre pared a mortuary report for the past year, at the request of the health officer of the city of New York, who is preparing statistics from all the cities in the United States. The death rate of Burlington is said to be five for each one thousand inhabitants, which fig ures would make Burlington the healthiest city in the world. Unfortunately these figures are of no value whatever, as they are not accurate, for one-half of the deaths are never reported, and persons never think of obtaining a burial permit as the ordinance requires. If a few persons were fined for neglecting this matter, the record might be kept correct in a short time, and the statis tistics would be of some value.
