THE 9TH ANNUAL TEJANO MUSIC AWARDSBy Francisco CordovaThe San Antonio convention arena in Texas will be the sight for the 9th Annual Tejano Music Awards on Friday, March 17, 1989. The event, which recognizes Tejano Recording Artists and their work, will have as it's hosts Cheech Marin and Vicki Carr. The awards entertainment will include David Marez, Latin Breed, Elsa Garcia, Linda V., Joe Posada, Selena, and Grupo Mazz. The expected attendance for this year's event is 10,000.The Tejano Music Awards were initiated in 1980 by Rudy Trevino and Gilbert Escobedo. Their desire was to promote a better understanding and appreciation for music from the Hispanic Community.Three women have been nominated in the Female Entertainer of the Year category. They are Jean Le Grand, Selena Quintanilla, and Patsy Torres. Selena and Patsy have also been nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year along with Elsa Garcia.Jean Le Grand, who was bom April 20, 1961 in Long Beach, California has been active with music since the age of seven.Selena Quintanilla, and her group (Los Dinos) are the younger generation of Tejano Music. Selena is 17 years old and has been singing since the age of 9. She performed in Pueblo, Colorado at the Minnequa Club Ballroom, in 1988. Patsy Torres, bom Patricia Donita in San Antonio, began playing trumpet in ninth grade. In late 1982, she started the Patsy Torres Band.
