ALFRED — Arnold Goldman, 49. Kennebunk, who was con victed in February by a tra verse jury of conspiracy to commit illegal bookmaking, was sentenced in York County Superior Court Friday to serve from one to three years Maine State Prison. Goldman’s attorney, Charles W. Smith of Kennebunk, said he would appeal to the Maine Law Court. Goldman, general manager of the Arlen Box Co. in Kenne bunk, was released in $1,000 bail. A stay of the sentence pending the appeal was granted y Justice Lincoln Spencer. Goldman had been charged by Maine State Police with conspiring with convicted Bid deford bookie Lucien Therrien and a Portland woman. There' s a Martel, as the result of a se ries of raids in Biddeford, San- Hone and Portland in October, Therrien was convicted and has completed a jail term. The case against the Portland wom an is still pending. During the pre-sentencing hearing, Gold man contended he had gambled heavily but was neither a layoff man nor connected with the paling syndicate as charge b y the state. Principal state's evidence against Goldman included testi mony by Therrien and interpre tations of figures in books seiz ed in the raid in Therrien’s Cue Stick Lounge in Biddeford. _ Prior to the sentencing hear ing, motions for setting aside of the jury conviction and acquit tal and also for a new trial were heard, but were denied by Jus tice agence’. , In handing down the sen tence, Justice Spencer said his basic consideration was imple menting public policy was set but the paefane in making book making a felony, under which conspiracy to commit a felony also became a serious crime. Both Assistant Attorney Ge neral Daniel G. Lilley and Goldman's attorney, Charles now, a heavy fine was the usu al sentence for such a convic t. But Lilley contended that ition of fines had failed to halt the gambling and request ed that a prison sentence be im posed.
