Page 4PRO-FASCIST CARTELS SUPPRESS THE TRUTHIn America, the cartel merchants of death, working for a soft peace with Germany, do not burn the books they want to suppress. They stop them from being printed so there is nothing to burn.author of a book which somehow got off the presses and is going through a form of suppression familiar to writers who tell the truth about Big Business, I speak from experience. In 1943. alter some years ot Investigative work as a special agent ot the Congress. I had accumulated a mass of official documents which revealed that the control of our patent system had become the secret weapon of the Nazis In America from the time of Hitler's ascendancy. The eifect of that control upon vital materials needed by our Air Force was part of the story I had to tell. I had seen President Roosevelt at the White House before I undertook the Job. I was armed by subpoenas signed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives to obtain my facts. In other words, what I had to write about was backed by official documents, a number of which could be described as startling.Opposition StartsE. P Dutton Ac Co.. one of the oldest publishing houses in America, already had published two of my books which had been widely reviewed, and the president of the company, John Macrae Snr.. received my new pro|xsal with enthusiasm. My book, which Is called The Wild Blue Yonder, was approved by George Moreby Acklom. for years editor-tn-chlef of Dutton's. But for his defence of it. and Macrae's support. It would not have been printed.Every argument that could be brought against my book to prevent, or at least hold up its publication, was presented at the last editorial conference I was to attend at the House of Dutton. This was explained by John Macrae. Snr. who had asked me to tight for my book at the editorial conference. The facts of Under Cover, he said, would never have been printed in the newspapers. The press, more than any other institution, failed to prevent this war. That's why 1 am interested In books of the Under Cover type. Unfortunatrly, I do not find very many who agree with me. even in my own company.I finally persuaded the people around me to order the book for publication and print 5,000 copies. It had been rejected by fifteen publishing houses before 1 saw it. The USA knows what happened after that. When sinister outside Influences attempted to suppress the book after I began to print it. the sales climbed to more than 500,000 copies.I don't know how long I'm going to live, but I will get my satisfaction by printing books that expose contemporary piracy. When all our avenues of criticism have been blocked we will lose our country. As a matter of fact I am about to publish a book even more startling than yours about cartels. It Is being written by a famous chemist consultant who for years was close to the manipulations of I G Farben. He will tell how that organization Influenced our Industries and almost wrecked our country!By EMILE GAUVREAUDirector-in-Chief of investigations under USA Govt. Patents CommitteeWWMINMIA few days later. John Macrae Snr. dropped dead. From that time, which was In February, 1944, a cold silence fell over the negotiations. The book was kept oil the presses until August 18, finally appeared under perfunctory announcements In the advertising sections of the literary magazines of the Sunday Times and Herald Tribune. The Times buried a report of The Wild Blue Yonder In Its back pages, avoiding all references to my official documents I could understand why. My book names our great Industries, their officials, and the part they played in German cartel devices which throttled competition, raised prices, restricted the output of our war material until we were on the brink of disaster, suppressed Inventions and discouraged Inventiveness.CorporationsThese industries control the national advertising which appears In our newspapers. About thirty corjxira-tions own all or dominate the pipelines of thought to the American people! They also can check or expand the flow of the millions of dollars of national advertising revenue which streams Into the dally columns of the metropolitan press.Meanwhile, all advertising of my book had been stopped by Dutton's, after the original announcement. Upton Sinclair, internationally known author, tried to eome to my rescue by writing a powerful endorsement of the book. The publishing house threw it In the waRte-basket.Dutton's did not want to have anything to do with a book exposing cartels. In this connection I am permitted to reveal the following facts from a special Investigator of the anti-trust division of the Department of Justice.Another ExposureBefore my book was published, the manuscript on the cartel revelations already referred to and ordered by the late John Macrae Snr.. was delivered to Dutton's. The author of the book was the Internationally known chemist. Howard Ambruster. of Westfield, NJ, who had been used as a consultant by the I G Farben laboratories, the heart of the Nazi cartel system. The chemist's book exposed from top to bottom the German cartel system, and the American monopolies tied up to It. Dutton's informed Ambruster that his manuscript would not be published, and offered him 6.500 dollars to cancel his agreement. He was asked by lawyers representing E. P. Dutton Co. to sign a legal release which would have eliminated ail references to Standard Oil Co. and the DuPonts from his manuscript. in the unlikely event that It might be published elsewhere. The chemist refused to sign this release. At the present time an active and powerful lobby of cartel experts is at work in Washington to prevent the compulsory licensing of cartel deals. Without compulsory licensing, our potential enemies will be armed all over again when this war is over.gERNARD O'DOWD, militant poet of the Nineties, and widely regarded as the finest Australia has yet produced, will be interviewed over 2FC at 2 p.m. this Sunday.
