RAILROAD ENTHUSIASM. A Crowded House Testifies to the Earnestness of San Diego's Desires.Tile nieutlug at Louis’ Ouern House Inst evening was full of enthusiasm, and the crowded hall showed plainly that San Diego wants railroads. Bound after round of choers went up, until the Scene became one of intensified excitomont._ The City Guard Band wero thore and discoursed sweet strains, while outside a pyrotechnic display, gotten up hy W. H. Carlson, casta lurid glow over tho city and rallied citizens to the meeting.W. H. CARLSON,As soon as tho cheering his appearance called forth subsided, spoke of enthusiasm, saying that that was whatall are here for. It takes enthusiasm to boom; without it we cannot get railroads. Our object is to get all the progressive people of San Diego together; these are the people who believe in our future and will work for our welfare. To start out with, he wanted no misunderstanding, therefore ho said the Southern Pacific officers were not coming here right away, but the following telegram would show that they are coming soon:San Francisco, March H. 18N8..IV. II. CUrleon, Sun Dirge : I cannob name the dav Mr. Huntington and myself will Im1 in Sail Diego. Mr. Huntington Is on his way out hero now, and very soon after he arrives we will go go San Diego.Charles Crocker. The speaker thought they would le here in five or six days. The road is now on its way as fast as men nnd money can bring it, and within a year after its completion San Diego will have a population of 75,000 people. He Is preparer! to give $145,000 towaid the building of the road, one-half when it was completed to Del Mar, and the other when it was finished. He was heart and sold in this matter, and never hesitated to pay for the music. Things do not boom themselves; we must boom them. We have one ru'lrond, we now want an-othcr. Competition is the soul of business; we must have the Bouthern Pacific. here from Los Angeles and Yuma. The Santa Ke holds the Intel lor route via Escondido and F.l Cajon, and nlso the route through Mission Valley. Tho best lino for the Southern Pacific, tho speaker said, is “along the coast, via Pacific Beach and Del Mur. Tho Del Mar lino will reach tlie lumber flats that ore to be at Old Town; It will reach deep water at Roseville; it will have light grades; it will be directly on the coast all the way.”“I Imlleve, he continued, “that through trains will bo running on the Southern Pacifl line between San Diego and Los Angeles in eight months, and that in one year from the present time, the Southern Pacific will be operating o lino from San Diego cither to Dos Palmas or to Flowing Wells. This will compel the Santa Fe to make a move in the same directon and nothing will remain for them to do but to complete their old northern Mexico project. This will open up two now countries tributary to Sun Diego and that moans a boom, compared to which the present one is only a little raise.”He said the Del Mar roud was simply holding the fort for tho Southern Pacific.VMth two roads direct to law Angeles ho was sure tho result would be that that county will become a portion of the back country of Hau Diego. The Santa Fe’s line to Los Angelos will bo in operation within sixty days, aud then when the trip can In) made in less than four hours, merchant will live in San Diego and ride up to the city of the Angels to look after their old business iutbrcsts once in a while.(Jbocrs greoted tho speech and the greatest enthusiasm prevailed.It. J. PENNELL was of the opinion that San Diego must have an opirositlon road. Tho Santa Fe had done gotal work, but un antagonist would niako it look to its laurels, and Sun Diego would bo the gainer.hon. neAtob a. vouno felt proud to be at such n meeting. All present Imd the wellfare of San Diego at heart, and ho was gluil we had citizens willing to take such interest in our mutual wellfare. This great corporation lias unwisely neglected this city ill the past only now to realize what it has lost therein-, but as it has concluded to immediately push the completion of its line to our grand and |ierfeet harbor as fust us men apd money can do it, therefore, we welcome It as a friend who lias at last learned to uppieclato our great advantugosund resources. and we will give It a portion of our traffic, which will bo divided with every road coming hore, as we cannot have too many.A committee consisting of Mossrs.
