Catholics took to singing an old hymn, called “ Confidence in God.” The Government assumed this to mean that they thought they were being persecuted, and were praying for Divine aid. Such imperti nence was not to be tolerated for a moment, and the use of the hymn was prohibited. Similarly, all the Catholic ' Churches in Posen (Prussian Poland) over which the Government had any control were closed, because the Archbishop, « Mgr. Ledochoweki, dared to place his diocese under the protection of the Most Sweet Heart of Jesus. If the express object had been to point out the quarter i whence this persecution is inspired, could ! it possibly have been done more plainly than by such an act as this? Are the powers of Heaven, or Hell, the more likely to resent an appeal to Heaven ?
