The “Top Drawer Collection” at the Homer Public Library contains nearly 40 books with a variety of topics. Among them are science fiction and scientific re-tor compiled from the local paper.“There is a lot of local history,” said Joy Griffin, a school teacher and freelance writer who runs the project.The first year, local writers turned in about a dozen manuscripts and the collection has grown slowly since.Mike McCann’s “Give Me the Hudson or the Yukon” is the best-known manuscript submitted. He has since beenself-published.The group doesn’t edit the books but has a few restrictions. Manuscripts must be between 50 and 500 pages, except those from children.
